Quick Guide: Which Projector Should You Buy?

There are many different projectors on sale and that may make you wonder how to choose the best projector. If you need help, we'll come to your rescue with the list of a few steps you can consider when purchasing your new projector with good contrast.

Step 1: Think about what it will be used for

First of all, you need to ask yourself what you are going to use it for. This little gadget has only been available for cinemas, offices and schools, while today it is becoming more and more popular in private homes or home offices. In view of this, we need to mention 3 main options that you can get:

  1. Home cinema and sports
An efficient home cinema projector should be a HD projector with excellent brightness and contrast so that you can enjoy movies in large format. It depends on the size of the living room, the lighting and the natural light coming into the room.

  2. Presentations
A good projector for presentations must have a HDMI port, a USB port and as many inputs as possible, to be paired with different computers and components. It should ensure a sharp picture quality so you can easily share presentations while keeping the audience engaged.

  3. Outdoor
If you want to get the most out of all that a portable projector has to offer, no matter where you are, you should consider investing in an inexpensive mini projector with good contrast. Portable projectors come in many sizes and shapes, as well as with a variety of features.

Step 2: Think about where it should be placed

It is important to have the projector in the correct position relative to the projector screen or wall on which you want the image. You can calculate the distance by doubling the desired size of the image, ie. if the screen of the projector is 2 m, place it 4 m from the screen. Think about an ultra short throw projector which eliminates eye glare and shadows.

Also think about the height if you place it on the table, wall or hang it in the ceiling.

  1. The table or the floor
These are the least demanding places to place your projector. It does not require a fortress, but it must be at the right distance and height to be able to project an excellent image. There are also a number of stylish table and floor stands that need to be stable and placed in a place where they can not fall so easily.

  2. The wall
Using a wall bracket or having a projection unit on the bookshelf is a smart and space-saving choice. Make sure the projector can breathe and the closed places on a bookshelf do not affect the air outlet. On the other hand, you can choose a wall bracket according to the weight of the projector as well as think about the wall base so you can choose the corresponding screws.

  3. The ceiling
Hanging it in the ceiling does not take up much space. Before attaching the projector, be sure to drag the image up until you get the desired size. Like the wall bracket, the ceiling bracket must be able to withstand the weight of the projector, while the projector must be at the right distance from both the ceiling and the screen. The cables must not interfere with the normal movements of the room.

Tip: Other features that facilitate placement

Keep in mind that some additional features can help you change your location:

  1. Short throws can reproduce a large image despite the short distance from the canvas / wall. Therefore, it is a perfect addition to projectors for presentations.

  2. Lens change means you can adjust the lens to get a good image, even if it is not in the center of the screen but is within the edges of the screen.

  3. The keystone function is useful if you cannot place the projector unit at the correct height or if you place it on the side wall. There is also something called vertical keystone, which helps you adjust the upper and lower edges of the image.

Step 3: Think about the technology you need

There are also several projector techniques to choose from:

  • Liquid Crystal Display LCD projector has a good brightness and works well in well-lit rooms. Given this, it is perfect for presentations and as a data projector. It is also energy efficient, location friendly and quiet.

  • A DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector is lighter, comes in a smaller size and ensures good contrast and blackness. Thanks to the excellent reproduction of 4K and full HDTV video formats, a DLP projector is perfect for sports and movies, either outdoors or at home.

  • A Direct-Drive Image Light Amplification (D-ILA) projector is a JVC variant of silicon wafers LCD projector. Their technology has been so well developed that it projects sharp images, has a good contrast and blackness, both HDTV and true 4K video format - perfect for a real cinema experience at home.

Step 4: Think of the video resolution you need

Image size and video resolution go hand in hand and affect the image quality, so make sure you choose the right one.

  • The HD resolution is 1280x720 pixels. These models come with slightly older technology so you can feel different pixel points on the image. It is sufficient for a TV projector, for games and programs via digital box.

  • Full HD resolution is 1920x1080 pixels ie. also 16: 9 format. Full HD resolution does not cost much, but still ensures higher image quality and contrast than the usual HD format. It works well for both presentation and movie projectors.

  • 4K Ultra HD comes with a slightly larger price tag and high video resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. 4K projector is becoming increasingly popular for sports and film screenings, thanks to its high resolution and smooth image.

  • For computer projectors, you can also consider buying a model with XGA of 1024x768 pixels that still produces a sharp image or WXGA of 1280x800 pixels that you can adjust between 16: 9 and 4: 3 formats.

Step 5: Do not forget the connections you may need

You need to think about the cables you need so that you can connect it to the source.

  • VGA is enough for presentation projectors because most computers support it.
  • DVI is used for digital transmission but cannot handle the sound and is therefore sufficient for TV viewing in combination with speakers connected to the source.
  • HDMI is perfect for watching movies, thanks to a high-resolution transmission of both image, contrast and sound.

Step 6: Also consider the weight of the light

The brightness of the LED lamp or laser is measured in ANSI lumens, and you need to think about how many ANSI lumens it should have, depending on the lighting and size of the room:

  1. 1000 ANSI is suitable for presentations and film screenings in small dark rooms.

  2. 1000 - 2500 ANSI projector lamps are available in most home theater projectors. Bright rooms require a brightness of at least 1600 ANSI lumens, which is also good for presentations in both ordinary conference rooms and smaller lecture halls.

  3. 2000 - 3000 ANSI lumens are suitable for large rooms and lecture rooms with normal lighting.

  4. Over 3000 ANSI lumens are used for concerts and the like.

Tip: Regardless of ANSI and the contrast of a laser projector or projector lamp, it is always smart to make the room darker, for the best possible result.
